  • La institución del matrimonio es central en la vida social afgana, como lo es la etnia o el qawm al que se pertenece. El estudio Decisions, Desires and Diversity: Marriage Practices in Afghanistán publicado en el año 2009 por el centro de investigación independiente Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit, trató de dilucidar cuál es el proceso de decisión para que se realice un matrimonio, y de qué aspectos sociales, económicos, culturales depende. En este artículo se mencionarán diferentes tipos de matrimonios (ban, badal, poligamía ¿), perfi lando ciertos estereotipos como la falta de poder de las mujeres en las tomas de decisiones - sobre todo si son ancianas y viudas-, y destacando aquellas situaciones que incrementan la violencia dentro del hogar como es la dote, práctica muy extendida en Afganistán que conlleva el endeudamiento de la mayoría de los jóvenes y sus familias.
    The institution of marriage is central to Afghan social life, as is ethnicity or qawm. The study Decisions, Desires and Diversity: Marriage Practices in Afghanistan published in 2009 by an independent research centre, Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit, intended to identify the decision-making process leading to marriage, and how social, economic and cultural aspects can impact this choice. This article will mention different types of marriage (ban, badal, polygam...), and nuance some stereotypes about the powerlessness of women in decision-making, -especially if they are elderly and widows-, as well as highlight situations that increase violence within the household as is for example the practice of dowry, a widespread tradition which leads to a majority of young husbands and their families being indebted.
