abstract This letter presents two configurations of thin and compact dual-band four-element broadside patch antenna arrays. They are built by feeding four dual-band patch radiating elements through a feeding patch by parasitic coupling. Similar to the electrically steerable passive array radiator (ESPAR), a driven element is directly excited from the power source, and then a number of passive radiating elements are excited through mutual coupling. The proposed dual-band arrays have the advantages of simple single-layer structure, ease of fabrication, low profile, light weight, and high gain. The performances of the dual-band arrays are analyzed in terms of antenna gain, radiation pattern, impedance matching and total efficiency, thereby validating the dual-band array configurations. © 2014 IEEE.
