abstract

  • Access to scientific production publicly funded during 2009 and 2010 through analysis of the case of the social sciences researchers who make up the National System of Researchers (SNI) of Uruguay is studied. Given that the country invests heavily in science and technology to promote the process of knowledge generation nationwide, it is relevant to characterize the modalities of access to scientific production and provide inputs to contribute to the evaluation of Uruguay's scientific policies from the perspective of information science. From the description of SNI it is seen that almost 80% of researchers belong to the Universidad de la Republica (UdelaR). In this context it is considered appropriate to determine whether the scientific production funded by public money reaches the university libraries. To this end, a study was carried out of the online catalog BIUR of UdelaR. Quantitative techniques were applied, based on the CVuy records of the scientific production of researchers in the social sciences, and compared with the data obtained from the BIUR catalog search and from Internet. It is concluded that 76% of the academic production of researchers in the social sciences is not represented in BIUR; however, 15% of their production is accessible on the Internet. The article presents an aspect of the possible future developments of research of relevance for the country.
